Practicing Carbon Neutrality: Paterson Water-Based Paint Custom Cabinets Set a New Benchmark for Eco-Friendly Home Furnishings

News FlashSource: Paterson Official Website

The year 2021 has been dubbed the “inaugural year of carbon neutrality,” with China officially incorporating “achieving peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality” into key tasks of its 14th Five-Year Plan. Paterson has actively responded to the national dual-carbon strategy—carbon peaking and carbon neutrality—by continuously innovating and experimenting in areas such as low energy consumption, high efficiency, and low emissions. The company has launched water-based solid wood custom cabinets featuring a full water-based paint process with three base coats and two topcoats, all using water-based primers and finishes, thereby pioneering a new path toward eco-friendly development in the industry.

To actively support China’s carbon neutrality strategy, in 2021 Paterson introduced water-based solid wood custom cabinets, expanding the industry’s definition of “eco-friendliness” beyond formaldehyde-free core materials to include non-toxic, odorless surface finishes, consistently upholding its commitment to health and sustainability. It is reported that Paterson began investing heavily in R&D as early as 2015, overcame coating technology barriers in 2020, and completed the transition from oil-based to water-based processes across its solid wood production lines in 2021, enabling multi-material customization across its entire product line to meet diverse eco-friendly demands.

According to research by the China Waterborne Coatings Research Institute, producing and using one kilogram of water-based paint can reduce VOC emissions by up to 0.8 kilograms compared to solvent-based alternatives. Switching one ton of solvent-based resin to water-based reduces VOC and other harmful emissions to roughly one-tenth of the original amount.

However, many so-called “water-based paint” cabinets marketed by other home furnishing brands often fall short of true water-based standards. In reality, they typically use oil-based primers (such as UV, PU, PE, or NC) combined with water-based topcoats, still containing eight heavy metals and continuing to release toxic VOCs over time.

In contrast, Paterson employs a fully water-based eco-manufacturing process—using water-based primers, topcoats, and solvents—with a 3-base, 2-topcoat system that is truly odorless, skin-friendly, and free of the eight heavy metals. The purified water used in Paterson’s water-based paint has a pH of 7.5, and during film formation, only water evaporates—no VOCs are released, resulting in a non-toxic, odorless product.

Moreover, to support water-based paint application, Paterson has built an industry-leading water-based paint smart factory equipped with advanced environmental systems exceeding national standards, including integrated wood dust collection rooms, woodworking dust extractors, machine sanding dust collectors, spray booth dust extraction units, and VOC treatment equipment.

Widely recognized in the industry, Paterson’s R&D team insists on using eco-friendly core boards, surfaces, edge banding, and adhesives that far exceed national standards. The company has successively obtained internationally authoritative certifications including the U.S. NAF (No Added Formaldehyde) exemption, Swiss SGS testing certification, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification, and China’s Ten Rings Certification. Recently, at the 2022 Home Furnishing Industry Digital Marketing Trends Conference, Paterson’s water-based custom cabinets were honored with the “Environmental Pioneer Award” as a rising force in sustainability.

Furthermore, to support China’s dual-carbon goals, Paterson has partnered with the China Environmental Protection Foundation and the China Children and Teenagers' Fund, co-founded the Paterson Home Environmental Research Institute with the Chinese Academy of Forestry, and joined the CASSU Child-Friendly Environment Standards Advocacy Alliance—all demonstrating its deepening commitment to environmental responsibility.

Achieving carbon neutrality is everyone’s responsibility, and enterprises must shoulder greater accountability and demonstrate leadership in their industries. As Mr. Zhang Jian, Chairman of Paterson, stated: “Environmental responsibility is in Paterson’s DNA. We will continue to uphold and pass on this legacy.” Undoubtedly, Paterson will keep fulfilling its social responsibilities through concrete actions, supporting carbon neutrality and sustainability, lighting the way for the home furnishing industry with its eco-conscious innovations, and enabling more consumers to choose Paterson’s water-based solid wood custom cabinets for healthier, greener living spaces.
