Water-Based Paint Industry Standard Establishes Criteria for Water-Based Paint Furniture; Paterson’s Water-Based Paint Cabinet-Wall-Door System Leads the Way in Eco-Friendly, High-Aesthetic Living
As environmental awareness continues to grow, water-based paint—recognized as an eco-friendly coating—has gradually become a market favorite. However, faced with the overwhelming variety of water-based paint products on the market, how should consumers choose? To address this issue, Paterson Water-Based Paint Cabinet-Wall-Door System spearheaded the development of a water-based paint industry standard (“Technical Specification for Waterborne Coating Finished Wood Products”), establishing 14 core criteria that officially took effect on June 1, providing consumers with clearer guidelines for product selection.
Background and Development of the Water-Based Paint Industry Standard
Water-based paint, as its name implies, uses water as its solvent. Compared to traditional oil-based paints, it offers eco-friendly benefits and is virtually odorless, making it increasingly popular among consumers. Around 2017, multiple provinces in China began banning solvent-based coatings—a pivotal moment for the water-based paint industry. However, due to immature waterborne coating technology at the time, low-quality, low-cost products flooded the market. Moreover, there was no unified quality standard for water-based paint cabinet-wall-door products, leaving consumers confused during purchase decisions.

Paterson Water-Based Paint Cabinet-Wall-Door System began tackling the challenges of transitioning from oil-based to water-based coatings as early as 2015, becoming the first in the custom furniture industry to adopt waterborne finishing technology and ushering in a new era of green water-based paint solutions. To address consumer pain points in selecting water-based paint furniture, Paterson Water-Based Paint Cabinet-Wall-Door System led the formulation of the “Technical Specification for Waterborne Coating Finished Wood Products,” incorporating 14 core standards to regulate production and application, ensuring higher environmental performance and enabling consumers to purchase genuinely high-quality products.
The Water-Based Paint Industry Standard Establishes 14 Core Criteria Ensuring Aesthetics and Environmental Safety
As a leading advocate and primary developer of the water-based paint industry standard, Paterson Water-Based Paint Cabinet-Wall-Door System has consistently delivered high-quality, eco-conscious products—the advantages of which are evident. Below, using Paterson’s system as an example, we detail the 14 core criteria of the standard:
(1) Flawless Paint Film Appearance
Paterson’s water-based paint wood veneer cabinet-wall-door system features a flawless finish—issues like fading, discoloration, uneven color, or visible scratches are entirely eliminated. The paint film also shows no bubbling, missed spots, wrinkling, or sand-through, guaranteeing superior surface quality.
(2) Paint Film Adhesion Strength Exceeds Grade 4 Standard
According to standard testing, flaking occurs only at intersecting cuts and affects ≤5% of the area. Paterson’s system demonstrates even stronger adhesion, ensuring the paint film remains firmly bonded and durable over time, preserving long-lasting beauty.
(3) Paint Film Hardness Exceeds Grade B
The paint film hardness is high enough to withstand a Grade B pencil lead without producing scratches exceeding 3mm. Paterson’s system meets this requirement, ensuring everyday use won’t easily wear down the finish.
(4) Excellent Resistance to Thermal Shock
After four cycles between -20°C and 120°C in laboratory conditions, visual inspection (with or without corrective lenses) reveals no bubbling, cracking, or significant loss of gloss. This demonstrates Paterson’s exceptional thermal stability—even under extreme temperature fluctuations, the product remains unaffected.
(5) High Impact Resistance: No Paint Film Damage
In tests conducted twice within 24 hours, with a 500mm impact height, the dent diameter does not exceed 10mm, and the paint film remains intact. Paterson’s strong impact resistance enhances product durability against physical damage.
(6) Dry Heat Resistance ≥ Grade 3
At 85°C for 20 minutes, only slight marks are visible from multiple viewing angles.
(7) Wet Heat Resistance ≥ Grade 3
At 85°C for 20 minutes, only slight marks are visible from multiple viewing angles.
(8) Water Resistance: No Abnormalities
After 24 hours of water immersion, no blistering, cracking, or peeling occurs—though slight discoloration or gloss variation may be acceptable.
(9) Stain Resistance ≥ Grade 4
After 16 hours of exposure to ethanol, citric acid, black coffee, and sodium carbonate, the paint film shows only minimal changes in gloss and/or color—indicating strong resistance to common household stains.
(10) Colorfastness to Yellowing ≥ Grade 4
Exposed to 340nm UV light for 128 hours, color change is no worse than Grade 4 on the gray scale. Notably, Paterson’s system achieves Grade 5—maintaining a like-new appearance without fading or yellowing over extended use.
(11) Odor Level ≤ Grade 2
Per LY/T 3236-2020, Grade 2 indicates a noticeable but non-offensive odor; Grade 1 is faint odor; Grade 0 is odorless. Paterson’s system is truly formaldehyde-free and produces no irritating odors.
(12) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) Emission (72h): μg/m³
Total VOC (TVOC) is below 350 μg/m³, posing no health risk. Testing confirms Paterson’s VOC emissions are far below the national green furniture standard limit of ≤0.3 mg/m³.
(13) Formaldehyde Emission Below National Standard Limits
Formaldehyde emission levels are stricter than those mandated by GB 39600–2021.
(14) No Harmful Heavy Metals
Paint film testing shows total lead ≤90 mg/kg; soluble cadmium ≤50 mg/kg; soluble chromium ≤25 mg/kg; soluble mercury ≤25 mg/kg. (Note: Heavy metal testing applies only to opaque-coated wood products.) Paterson’s system shows no detectable levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, dysprosium, selenium, or arsenic—significantly outperforming national standards.
Clearly, Paterson’s water-based paint cabinet-wall-door system not only complies with but exceeds the water-based paint industry standard, offering consumers superior home solutions—combining premium aesthetics, exceptional durability, and outstanding environmental performance—making it a top choice for healthy, sustainable living.
Looking ahead, Paterson Water-Based Paint Cabinet-Wall-Door System will continue advancing R&D and production of water-based paint products, delivering even better, more eco-friendly home solutions—and helping everyone achieve a more beautiful, sustainable, and functional dream home!
